Staircases

Over the years, the way we like to enjoy our homes has changed. The trend for the last 40 years or so has been to open the house up, letting in more light and having larger more open plan homes. This has been fed largely by advances in heating and insulation. In our grandparents day big rooms were cold and draughty, but today we can enjoy larger rooms while still remaining warm and cosy.

Doors get removed, walls are taken down and extensions are added. However few people think that moving a staircase is a viable option.   In many of the Victorian premises that are found all over the Thames Valley the stairwell runs horizontally across the middle of the house, effectively stopping the owners from opening up the downstairs space as they would wish.

However, the great news is that you really can take a staircase out and move it somewhere else. The reason stairs can be moved is that in 99.9% of cases the stairs are not part of the structural makeup of the property.

You will also be delighted to hear it can cost a lot less than you think.  We are well versed in moving  stairs and the transformation to a living space can be a wonderfully dramatic improvement that won’t break the budget.
